Huldra 10 nr 1

The first Huldra 10 in Tandbergista’s collection. It was years ago. It’s beauty and the reviews it got in many vintage hifi forums appealed to me. You could say it was the start of me becoming a Tandberg fan, a “Tandbergista”.

This was my first try to repair something myself. It never worked. I had it in some different repair shops, it came back working for a while, then the old problem came back – noise from Right channel.
But in the end one repairman fixed it. It worked but the sound quality was not what I expected. It was grainy, a bit dull and lacked sparkle. The treble had a harshness to it. Of course, I do not blame the repairman – the only objective was to make it work, not rebuilding it. I wanted a total recap, a rebuild. I decided to try myself..

I had no clue about doing repair work myself, but decided to research and try it. A recap or rebuild would be quite expensive otherwise and the repairshops I talked to weren’t too keen on doing it.
I did a complete recap (replaced all capacitors). The replacements were all audio grade Nichicon Muse and Elna Silmic II, except in the power supply. A recap isn’t that difficult. You need a good solder iron (a station with temp setting) and to practise your soldering skills before you start.

The result – much improved sound. Treble was on a totally different level, clear, crisp without being harsh. Bass was deeper, faster.

A relatively easy project. My interest in fixing vintage hifi gear was sparked.
Do see the other projects where I get deeper into trying to repair Tandberg gear.

Then Huldra 2 was bought. See that post here https://tandbergista.home.blog/huldra-10-nr-2/
In this post you will also find a “sound review” of Huldra 10, one of Tandberg’s most iconic receivers.
